Why is school improvement so important?

Continuous and rapid improvement is essential for all schools, whatever their standing within the performance tables and with Ofsted.  Successful schools are typically staffed by leaders and teachers who have an inherent desire to continually review and refine practice and are driven by the desire to improve pupil outcomes, for all groups of pupils, year on year.

Unfortunately, the hectic and often unpredictable daily routine of school life combined with reducing staff budgets often means that finding adequate resources to devote to self-evaluation and subsequent development activities is difficult.

Indeed, finding the resources to carry out this process to such a degree that it ensures rapid and significant impact on the rate at which pupil outcomes improve, can be extremely challenging.

What are the key features of effective school improvement activities?

Taking the time and finding the resources to conduct the improvement process frequently and regularly is incredibly important.

Schools need to development systems and procedures which enable them to build an accurate picture of their performance and the quality of their practice whilst keeping the burden of additional work and stress to a minimum.

The picture needs to be detailed so that the impact (or lack of it) made by individual staff and individual learning activities can be easily monitored and evaluated.  A forensic approach to quality assurance, data analysis and self-evaluation is necessary if leaders are to produce a rigorous, targeted and strategic plan for improvement.  A plan which will allow both the individuals responsible for each activity and those holding them to account to carry out their roles effectively: all stakeholders need to have a clear understanding of the vision and how they will know when they have successfully achieved that vision.
