Curriculum Development support

Castles Education’s team of experienced school leaders have a wealth of experience curriculum development and can provide reviews of curriculums at all levels.

We will ensure your curriculum is both aspirational and functional, creating the structure for excellent examination performance as well as providing broader learning experiences, which inspire hearts as well as minds.

Our approach to curriculum design is strategic and can include reviews of:

  • Budget projections
  • Staffing structures/numbers
  • Current and projected pupil numbers
  • Cohort abilities and needs (strengths and weakness in each cohorts acquisition of skills, knowledge and understanding)
  • Identified areas for improvement arising from data analysis, self-evaluation, action plans, SIP, LA and Ofsted reports.
  • The values, ethos and culture of your school.
  • Stakeholder voice.

Of course having an appropriate curriculum in place is only one piece of the jigsaw.

Its successful delivery is key.  Our comprehensive range of services can support you in this.

How many school leaders get sufficient time to complete thorough research and discuss their plans for curriculum development with teachers, pupils, parents and the wider community of stakeholders?

How many schools have a considered philosophy that drives their decisions about curriculum design and implementation?

Is the community’s answer to the question “What is education for?” at the heart of curriculum planning?

Is the overriding aim of your curriculum to provide rich and varied intellectual experiences for the young people in your care?

I suggest the honest answer to these questions for most schools is “no” and that the real driver behind curriculum design is providing pupils with the best chance of achieving a level of examination performance that is at least in line with or hopefully better than national expectation, for a relatively narrow set of pre-determined qualifications.  And who can blame them?

Amanda Spielman has said herself that in the current climate of accountability, with its overwhelming focus on examination results that, “most of us, if told our job depends on clearing a particular bar, will try to give ourselves the best chance of securing that outcome”.

It is refreshing to hear this view being taken by the new head of Ofsted but whether this will actually make any tangible difference to the inspection regime remains to be seen.

In our view, if a school is implementing a curriculum that delivers broad experiences that enrich a young person’s life and provides numerous opportunities for high quality learning, rather than just training pupils to pass examinations, then this should be applauded by the profession.

Unfortunately, recent experience leads the cynic to feel that current accountability around examination performance will remain whilst an additional level of accountability around curriculum design will be enforced.

The situation is likely to be one where the same level of performance across the same narrow range of qualifications will be expected whilst also providing a greater range of intellectual experiences.

Therefore intelligent, targeted curriculum planning is more important than ever.
