School Leadership Development Mentors

What is leadership development?

There are numerous articles and research papers that show effective leadership development has a significant and positive impact on pupil outcomes.  The weight of evidence is such that any headteacher who is serious about creating conditions for rapid, sustainable improvement has to be serious about leadership development at all levels.  This does not necessarily require a financial investment in successive rounds of expensive, certified courses.  In fact some of the most effective school leaders I have met have never taken part in these, although some do have their place within a broader programme of CPD.

What are the benefits of leadership development?

It really is a win-win.  The quality of your staff improves.  They have higher expectations of themselves, their colleagues and their pupils.  They take greater ownership and responsibility for raising standards.  They feel both empowered and inspired and that their creativity, ideas and contribution is valued. As a result, even though you have created individuals that are ready for new challenges and greater leadership opportunities you are more likely to retain their services following your investment in them personally and professionally.  Your recruitment and retention rates will be higher and your succession planning will be complete.

The most important aspect of leadership development is to generate a set of drivers that are inherent within the individual.  This set of drivers need to be so ingrained that they are inescapable, so that they guide each individual’s thoughts, energy and practice at all times.

What is effective leadership in education?

Effective leadership is to a large extent an outcome of effective interpersonal relationships.  Therefore we accept that our criteria for a successful leader is debatable and each of you will have your own view as to what these qualities and characteristics are.   However, the research highlights some common ground that we have found to be true in our own personal experiences as school leaders.

How can Castles Education can help with leadership development?

At Castles we support potential leaders develop the following drivers, through an ongoing programme of mentoring and coaching:

  1. An ambitious vision and high expectations for the achievement of all pupils.
  2. The ability to communicate this vision and ambition effectively to all stakeholders so that pupils are fully supported, both within their school, family and beyond.
  3. Rigorous, robust and often ruthless self-evaluation.
  4. Coherent and comprehensive plans for improvement, with effective procedures for monitoring progress towards ambitious, clearly defined targets.
  5. Unswerving focus on raising standards through development of high-quality teaching, learning and assessment.
  6. Readiness to take difficult decisions to ensure the rapid implementation of actions to address areas of underperformance.
  7. Desire to see all pupils succeed; having the ability to assess and monitor each individual pupil’s progress and make timely interventions to ensure all pupils achieve their potential.
  8. Care about the broader development and achievement of each child, both inside and the classroom and beyond.

Leaders need to be able to demonstrate these drivers have been at the heart of all decisions and activities.  This will mean a change of thoughts and habits for many staff and will require support and challenge over a significant period of time, in order to successfully challenge perceptions and change behaviours.

It needs an ongoing, intellectual dialogue between the individual and an experienced and effective leader mentor/coach; the development of a relationship of openness and honesty that doesn’t necessarily fit into the normal, existing approach to leadership development.
